How to block Instagram on iPhone

Updated November 5, 2026

You can block Instagram on iPhone with a Screen Time App Limit, close the website gap by adding instagram.com to Screen Time's Never Allow list, or use a blocking app like Sisa that blocks Instagram on a schedule and shows a friend's message when you open it. Instagram's own daily-limit reminder can be dismissed with one tap, so it works as a nudge, not a block.

Instagram is harder to quit than most apps because it is also where friends message you and post things you don't want to miss. That makes "just delete it" unrealistic for many people. The goal is usually narrower: no Reels at night, no feed during work, no reflexive opening in a queue. Here are four ways to get there on iPhone, from the weakest to the strongest.

1. Instagram's own time reminder

Instagram has a built-in daily limit: Profile → ☰ → Time management (called Time spent in some versions) → Daily limit.

When you reach it, Instagram shows a reminder. You dismiss it and keep scrolling. It's useful to notice how long you spend, but it doesn't block anything.

2. Block Instagram with Screen Time App Limits

Screen Time is built into every iPhone and is free.

  1. Open Settings → Screen Time. If it is off, tap App & Website Activity and turn it on.
  2. Tap App Limits → Add Limit.
  3. Expand Social, tick Instagram, then tap Next.
  4. Set the time you allow per day. One minute is the shortest limit Screen Time offers.
  5. Tap Add.

When the limit runs out, Instagram greys out. The Ignore Limit button on that screen is the weak point: one tap and you are back in. To make the limit hold, set a Screen Time passcode (Settings → Screen Time → Lock Screen Time Settings), turn on Block at End of Limit, and let someone else choose the passcode.

The same steps work for any app. See how to block TikTok on iPhone for more on making "Ignore Limit" harder to tap.

3. Block instagram.com in Safari

Once the app is blocked, most people discover that instagram.com works fine in Safari. To close that:

  1. Go to Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions and turn it on.
  2. Tap App Store, Media, Web & Games → Web Content and choose Limit Adult Websites.
  3. Under Never Allow, tap Add Website and enter instagram.com.

This blocks the site in Safari and in most other browsers on the iPhone. Unlike an App Limit, it is all day, every day: there is no schedule.

4. Block Instagram on a schedule, with a friend in the loop

If you want Instagram for messages during the day but not at night, a schedule fits better than a daily limit. Sisa blocks the apps you choose during the hours you choose, and when you open Instagram anyway, a message from a friend is waiting on the block screen instead of the feed.

  1. Install Sisa and create a schedule: pick Instagram, the hours (for example 22:00 to 07:00) and the days.
  2. Choose a lock mode. Soft lock allows one 15-minute bypass a day. Hard lock (Pro) has no bypass.
  3. Join or create a circle with a friend or two and let them write you a message.

Turning a schedule off takes a five-second countdown, and an active schedule can't be edited. The free plan covers one schedule with up to three apps, so Instagram, TikTok and one more fit without paying. Blocking instagram.com through Sisa needs Pro.

Frequently asked questions

Can I block Reels but keep Instagram messages?

Not inside Instagram itself. The practical workaround is to block the Instagram app during the hours you lose to Reels and reply to messages outside those hours, or use Instagram's web version for messages only.

Will my followers know I blocked Instagram?

No. Blocking the app on your phone changes nothing on your account. You just can't open it during the blocked time.

Does blocking Instagram stop notifications?

An App Limit or a Sisa schedule stops the app from opening, but notifications may still arrive. Turn them off in Settings → Notifications → Instagram if you don't want to be pulled back in.

Is there a free way to block Instagram completely?

Yes. A one-minute Screen Time App Limit plus instagram.com on the Never Allow list, with a passcode someone else chose, blocks both the app and the website at no cost.
